climbing routes on freestanding rocks

In my area there are often skinny rocks that are the climbing peaks.
In OSM they are all tagged with natural=peak and often a surrounding cliff or rock.

I'm a bit confused when it comes to the concept of climbing crags.
So would I have to add a crag with the same name? Would I add separate crags for different directions (paper climbing guides often separate routed by direction). Unfortunately you in open climbing you can't directly add climbing routes to peaks which in this case would make the most sense to me.

Hi @Hedaja, thanks for reaching out! 🙂

Currently:

to show the crag icon on map, it is enough to use the combination natural=peak + sport=climbing, possibly with name, and route count is taken as a sum from climbing:sport / climbing:trad / etc tags. If you zoom close enough, the freestanding climbing=route or climbing=route_bottom node should be visible.
if you want to show the crag reference view, with all the routes in the Feature panel and possibly images + topos (like here) –> this currently works only for relations. In that case, you would have to create a new relation climbing=crag with the same name, and add all the routes in it.

If you want to share your location in a URL, it would help to understand it better 🙂

I was trying it on this peak:

It definetly shows up as you explained but I guess it makes sense that I'd have to add the relation.
I'll give it a shot when I find time.

Hedaja Beatiful - you have pretty good images 👍️

In this case - to really create the topo, you would need to create the relation.
Here is how you can do it inside the app:

open the peak: https://openclimbing.org/node/1468548654
click "Edit place" button
add tag climbing=crag in the Tags section - observe the type changed to "▲ Climbing crag"
find the "Climbing routes" section and click "Convert to relation"
now you can add the routes by name -- or you can enter the id of already created route - in your case n13112937634 (this is preview functionality, yet to be documented 🙂)

This will create the relation with one route+the peak, and move all the climbing tags from the peak to the newly created relation.
After save, it will be ready to mark the topo in our topo editor.
